President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to extend anti-corrution war to NNPC and NCS
President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to extend his administration’s ongoing anti-corrution war to other departments and agencies of government.
Buhari, according to a news item monitored on the Nigerian Television Authority on Thursday, spoke in Nairobi during a meeting he had with members of the Nigerian Community in Kenya.
Buhari said although heart-rending, the revelations may not be compared to the corruption that would be exposed by the time his administration commence the probe of other agencies like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Nigerian Customs Service.
“It (the arms deal) is heart-rending. But that is just once source. You know we have not got to NNPC yet not to talk of Customs,” he said.
The President promised that he would not relent in his effort to eradicate corruption in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari sent his first two executive bills to the Senate.
Buhari, in a letter to the Senate and addressed to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, said he was introducing the bills for formal consideration and enactment into law by the legislature.
In the letter read by Saraki, during plenary, Buhari informed that the first bill provides for the repeal of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 as amended in 2012.
He explained that the bill would “make comprehensive provisions to prohibit the laundering of criminal activities, expand the scope of money laundering, and provide protection for employees of various institutions, bodies and professions who may discover money laundering”.
On the second bill, President Buhari said it “seeks to facilitate the provision and obtaining by Nigeria of international assistance in criminal matters.”
These, he stressed, include the provision and obtaining of evidence and things, and the making of arrangements for persons to give evidence or assist in criminal investigations.
He further stated that the bill seeks “the recovery, forfeiture or confiscation of property in respect of offences, the restraining of dealings in property or the freezing of assets that may be recovered, forfeited or confiscated in respect of offences.”

Mr Ogunsanya, who is the fifth witness, told the court that their first job was appreciating the military in their role in the fight against the terrorist group, Boko Haram operating in the north eastern part of Nigeria through the placement of adverts in several national newspapers and television stations.
A sixth witness, Kabiru Ibrahim, also told the court that he received $1 million from a previous witness, Nneka Ararume, a staff of Assets Resource Management Company (ARM) and an investment officer to Mr Metuh, which he converted to Naira and paid into the account of Destra Investment Limited belonging to Mr Metuh.
He, however, told the court that he never sold Dollars to Mr Metuh at any point in time.
With a request for an adjournment by the prosecutor, Sylvanus Tahir, Justice Okon Abang adjourned further trial till February 4.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, on Thursday, called on Governor Olusegun Mimiko, to return all funds stolen from the treasury of the state by his government before the expiration of his government.
He disclosed that the opposition party was aware that Mimiko had been deducting an average of N1.5 billion naira monthly from the state allocation as security votes for the past seven years of administration without any corresponding benefits.

Symptoms
- About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill (i.e., develop Zika).
- The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
- The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.
- Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for a few days but it can be found longer in some people.
- Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.
- Deaths are rare.
Diagnosis
- The symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya, diseases spread through the same mosquitoes that transmit Zika.
- See your healthcare provider if you develop the symptoms described above and have visited an area where Zika is found.
- If you have recently traveled, tell your healthcare provider when and where you traveled.
- Your healthcare provider may order blood tests to look for Zika or other similar viruses like dengue or chikungunya.
Treatment
- No vaccine or medications are available to prevent or treat Zika infections.
- Treat the symptoms:
- Get plenty of rest
- Drink fluids to prevent dehydration
- Take medicines, such as acetaminophen or paracetamol, to relieve fever and pain
- Do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen. Aspirin and NSAIDs should be avoided until dengue can be ruled out to reduce the risk of hemorrhage (bleeding). If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication.
- If you have Zika, avoid mosquito bites for the first week of your illness.
- During the first week of infection, Zika virus can be found in the blood and passed from an infected person to another mosquito through mosquito bites.
- An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people.
Eritrea polygamy forced story
A satirical story that Eritrean men
have been ordered to marry at least two wives, which has been shared
across Africa, has upset Eritrean officials.
"Even a madman in [the Eritrean capital] Asmara would know that this story was not true," an Eritrean official told the BBC.The hoax was first published online on a Kenyan website called Crazy Monday.
Some men have commented on Twitter that they are ready to travel to Eritrea to find a new wife.
Crazy Monday is well known for its focus on scandalous stories and gossip as part of an attempt to attract a younger readership, says Mathias Muindi from the BBC's media monitoring service.
But this has not stopped it being reported in many countries from Nigeria to South Africa, with some suggesting that it was true.
The story said that to make up for the shortage of men in the country, following the civil war with Ethiopia from 1998-2000, every man must marry at least two women or face imprisonment.
'Dark Forces'
Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel tweeted that "the media frenzy to parrot this ludicrous, fabricated and trite story... is appalling".One news website, Sahara Reporters, has retracted the story acknowledging that it was a hoax.
In another tweet Mr Yemane said "the story illustrates [the] vileness of the dark forces of disinformation and proclivity of others to readily embrace the negative narrative on Eritrea".
The New York-based group Human Rights Watch says that there is a "dismal human rights situation" in Eritrea and the restrictions there, including on the freedom of expression, have led some to call it the North Korea of Africa.

Mr Umar made the threat in Abuja on Wednesday after the prosecution failed for the third time on Wednesday to open its case against Mr Orubebe and call its witnesses.
The Tribunal Chairman, however refused to accede to the request by the defence counsel, Mr Selekowei Larry, to strike out the case.
Instead, he announced that the prosecution would be given one more chance to open its case failing which the Tribunal will strike out the case for them to put their house in order.
The name, Orubebe, became well known in Nigeria after he attempted to scuttle the 2015 election, accusing the electoral body and its boss at that time, Professor Attahiru Jega, of being bais.

Ketu sawmill is at blaze
Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday morning as fire gutted parts of the Ketu Sawmill in Lagos South West Nigeria.
It is believed that excessive current from the circuit breakers may be the cause of the fire, which has been put under control by men of the Lagos State Fire Service.
