A correspondent of the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) in Imo State, Miss Chidi Opara, was kidnapped on Wednesday
at her residence on MCC Road, Urata, Owerri.
According to family members, her abductors have demanded N5 million ransom.
Governor Rochas Okorocha has described
the abduction as blackmail, saying the culprits wanted to discredit his
administration’s achievements in the war against kidnapping and other
heinous crimes.
Okorocha’s reaction was contained in a
statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Sam Onwuemeodo. He
wondered why his detractors would descend so low by abducting a female
journalist.
He assured the people that his
administration would assist the police in apprehending the abductors as
well as releasing the victim.
