Director
Jennifer Kent, known for her debut horror film ‘The Babadook’, will adapt the
true-crime story of Alice Mitchell and Frida Ward, for the film 'Alice + Freda
Forever'.
Mitchell
and Ward married in 1892 when they were teenagers, with Mitchell pretending to
be a man.
Their
parents, however, discovered the true nature of the relationship and banned
them from each other. Later Mitchell, unable to accept that Ward had moved on,
made plans to kill her ex-lover, and carried them out.
Mitchell
was sectioned to an asylum as mentally-unwell - for the murder and her
sexuality - and she died a number of years later: the prison did not record the
details of her death.
The
murder shocked North America, whose contemporary culture generated a number of
pop imitations - which promoted the stereotype of masculine, violent lesbians.
The film
is to be based on the non-fiction book by Alexis Coe, ‘Alice + Freda Forever: A
Murder in Memphis’, which describes the love affair, murder, and America’s pop
culture reaction.
Kent is
from Brisbane Austrlia, and worked first with Las von Trier on his film
Dogville, starring Nicole Kidman.
Her debut
film, The Babadook (2014), has a depressed widow stalked by a spirit, which
threatens to kill her son. The film was critically very well-received, with a
98% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
